Hibiscus Rose Beauty Latte

 

By now, most of you know that skin health is a major priority in my life, and that I'm meticulous about how I tend to my face. But to a large degree, how clear, glowy, and luminous our skin looks is a result of what's going on internally. Supplementing a diet rich in whole foods with those that work specifically to nourish the skin is key to achieving a fresh complexion and true inside-out radiance. And because you guys are loving on all things latte-inspired right now, I felt inspired to blend a latte with serious beautifying benefits using a few of my favorite, most potent skin-soothers. The result is this swoony, velvety hibiscus infusion laced with rosewater, collagen, pearl, and cult-favorite Beauty Butter.

HIBISCUSFor a cell-deep dose of anti-aging antioxidants and vitamin C. Hibiscus brightens and heals the skin, supports detoxification and elimination, tames excess heat and inflammation, and pacifies the always-in-overdrive nervous system for less stress and more bliss. All essentials for that coveted lit-from-within glow.

COLLAGEN | If you've yet to jump on the bandwagon, now is the time. Collagen is the main structural protein found in our skin and other connective tissues, and as we age the naturally-occurring levels within our body begin to decrease, causing skin to age, wrinkle, and dull. Supplementing with collagen helps to repair and heal damaged skin tissue, creates a plumping effect, and adds an overall glow. Collagen also serves to rebuild the digestive lining, in turn elevating our gut health, which is of course intimately connected to skin health.

ROSEWATER | When ingested, rosewater has a calming, cooling, hydrating, and inflammation-fighting effect on the skin. It also deeply nourished the nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety for fewer emotionally-charged breakouts and bouts of inflammation.

PEARL | At first glance, supplementing with pearl sounds extravagant, expensive, and very much on the trendy, unsubstantial side. And while it does feel undeniably luxurious, it's not as costly as one would assume and is an ancient beauty ritual long revered in Asian cultures (who generally boast the most amazing complexions). Powdered pearl is rich in beautifying antioxidants, enzymes, and minerals, and contains signal proteins that stimulate the natural regeneration of collagen. After just a few days of consistent use, I always notice positive differences in my skin tone and clarity. 

BEAUTY BUTTERA favorite beauty-boosting treat for hydrated, clear, glowy skin. Pearl Butter's Beauty Butter is a mix of stone-ground and impossibly dreamy coconut butter (which alone is incredibly nourishing for the skin), antioxidant-rich pink dragonfruit, pearl powder, and collagen. Swoon.


HIBISCUS ROSE BEAUTY LATTE

Serves 1

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 tsp organic hibiscus powder
  • 1 tbsp Bulgarian rosewater
  • 2 tbsp collagen peptides
  • 1/2 tsp pearl powder
  • 1.5 cups warmed unsweetened nut/seed milk 
  • 1-2 tbsp Pearl Beauty Butter (can substitute with regular coconut butter, if needed)
  • Optional: touch of raw honey

Preparation: Combine all ingredients in a blender, and process on medium-high for 60 seconds. Pour, sip, and savor.

Summer Skin Guide: The Essentials

 

Earlier this year, I shared my holistically-inspired skin regime, and was thrilled to hear how many of you felt inclined to clean-up your self-care products as a result! While my routine generally remains the same no matter the time of year or life circumstance, I do shift focuses and incorporate new products and practices during the summer season.

The excessive external - and resulting internal - heat can have an incredibly irritating, congesting, and inflammatory effect on the skin, which is truly just a mirror for the state of our overall health. Many of us also travel more frequently during the sunnier months, which of course only serves to exacerbate a less-than-ideal skin situation. But fear not, for there are some beautifully-effective natural products and practices that work overtime to keep you looking and feeling glowy and confident, even when it's 1000 degrees and humid out. Below, find my tried-and-true essentials for happy, radiant, and lustrous summer skin. 


BEAUTY DUST | Because as annoying as it sounds, beautiful, glowing skin truly does begin on the inside. The blend of adaptogenic pearl, goji berry, schisandra, and rehmannia is designed to boost the clarity and radiance of the skin (as well as hair and nails) and reduce breakout-causing stress from the digestive system outward. I carry the travel-friendly sachets when abroad to add into teas and smoothies. 

TATA HARPER PURIFYING CLEANSER | The ultimate cleanser for removing surface impurities (hello, sweat rolling down my face 24/7) and environmental stressors from the skin. It leaves my skin feeling cool and clean, yet still hydrated and dewy. I oil-cleanse in the am, and cleanse with this post-workout and/or in the evening to wash off the day. 

CALENDULA EYE BALM | For eyes, lips, and cuticles. A blend of calendula oil, mango seed butter, and lavender, this multi-tasking miracle balm plumps the skin, softens fine lines, quells inflammation, and diminishes dark undereye circles. A must for those of you frequenting air-travel this season. 

SURF MUD SPF | The cleanest, dreamiest option in way of sun protection. I sun worship all summer long, so a solid waterproof spf is a necessity. Conventional sunscreen is full of endocrine-disrupters and cancer-causing carcinogens, so make this the summer you switch to something natural. Containing coconut for hydration, zinc for protection, and chocolate for antioxidant-support, this blend is entirely swoon-worthy (and effective). 

BULGARIAN ROSE WATER | I add a splash of this in my water and tea daily for calm, cool, clear skin from the inside out. I also swear by rose water for less anxiety and greater internal equilibrium. And for external use, this is still the best product out there and forever my hydrosol of choice. 

BLUE TANSY RESURFACING MASK | A longtime favorite that just can't be beat. This mask is clarifying and cooling, resurfacing the skin with natural BHAs and AHAs to gently shed the top layer of skin. As powerful as it is, the formula is gentle enough to be used multiple times each week, and always leaves my sensitive, easily-irritated skin feeling refreshed and with a glow. 

TATA HARPER CLARIFYING MASK | Tata's newly-released mask that has already topped my list. Super clarifying and calming for my breakout- and redness-prone skin, yet ultra gentle and nourishing. It has an enzymatic peel effect to resurface and decongest the skin, contains quartz sand crystals for a gentle exfoliation, and draws upon chlorella to impart a hydrated glow. Another must-have travel companion. 

CELLULAR REPAIR SERUM, CLEAROil-based serums are of upmost importance during the summer to ensure skin doesn't overproduce breakout-causing sebum, and to impart a natural dewy glow. True Botanicals is a force of nature - the whole line has captivated me, as it's ultra clean and totally natural, yet scientifically-developed to work exceptionally well. This serum in particular keeps skin clear and decongested, yet hydrates on a cellular level to prevent oxidation and aging.   

CITRINE BODY OIL | A heavenly blend of ultra nourishing orange blossom, rosehip, and neroli oils. I use this daily post-shower and end up with the most divine glow (and scent) for the rest of the day. 

COLD SHOWERS | Especially important during the warmer months to temper internal heat. Equally as beneficial for the skin as for the nervous system.

I have been a loyal devotee to the Tammy Fender Holistic Skincare line for years. Like, way before I was a nutritionist and really thought about or cared what went into my body + onto my skin. I snuck in for one of these coveted treatments last week, and it honestly blew me away. I wouldn't even classify the treatment as a facial. About halfway through the facial, another practitioner enters the room to begin reflexology on the feet. It was unreal. As we know, reflexology is so much more than a mere foot massage, but an ancient art used to restore internal balance to the entire body + mind. This, paired with the acupressure point face, head, and neck/shoulder massage, left me floating and virtually tension-free. 

I am actually not one to naturally prioritize self-care (though it's something I'm actively working on), but this treatment was able to shift my perspective on caring for and luxuriating myself. I emerged feeling brand new, totally restored, and deeply connected, and proceeded to have a really positive and productive day and week. FROM A FACIAL.

Given the truly transformative mind-body shifts experienced from my treatment, it almost feels superficial to mention that my skin looked and felt the best it had in years. I was in the midst of a pretty hormonally-taxing week and my skin was in no way hiding this, but the next day I woke up with healed, smooth, and glowing skin. I've committed to making this treatment part of my monthly routine, because it really felt like medicine for my body, mind, and soul.

Evening Routine: Hydrotherapy

As an empath with workaholic tendencies, I oftentimes find myself feeling scattered and drained by the end of the day (anyone else?). Luckily, incorporating grounding self-care rituals in the evening has been a huge help in regaining and maintaining mental + emotional balance, even during the busiest of days + weeks. As of late, I’ve been totally vibing with this nighttime routine, so I thought I’d share.

This regime centers around hydrotherapy, which is essentially just the use of water in a therapeutic capacity.

HOT BATH

I fill my tub with the hottest water I can stand and toss in an enormous amount of magnesium salt, aluminum-free baking powder, and a bit of Dr. Singha’s Mustard Bath. This combination is ultra detoxifying, literally drawing out impurities through the skin and infusing the body with a dose of mineralizing magnesium. Magnesium is easily absorbed through the skin, and is key in maintaining balanced mental health - it stimulates the production of serotonin, mitigates the damage of chronic stress, and eases anxiety. This bath soak trio also offsets all the electromagnetic pollution we take in via our technology-driven lives and balances the body’s pH level. So basically, get into your bathtub, like now. 

Needless to say, this is a totally cell phone free situation so I either zen out in silence or bring a book. Within minutes I’m sweating (this is good!), so I usually have a large glass of water or herbal tea near by to keep from dehydrating. I allot myself a solid 25-30 minutes to sit, soak, and really drop into the calm evening energy.

COLD SHOWER

Then comes the cold shower. Trust me, it feels incredible after a super hot bath. I adopted this ritual from Guru Jaget’s book Invicible Living (which is a must read for anyone at all interested in the magic of Kundalini yoga). Cold showers are deeply nourishing and strengthening to the nervous system, which influences our mental + emotional health to a very large degree. It actually has an adaptogenic effect on our systems, helping to reduce the affects of stress and anxiety. Showering in cold water also boosts the metabolism, improves lymphatic detoxification, cleanses the circulatory system, decreases body-wide inflammation, increases immunity, and makes the skin seriously clear + glowy. 

I find repeating the mantra “If I can handle the chilliness of the water, I can handle the chilliness of life” (an adaptation of a Yogi Bhajan quote) helps to get me through it. 

I emerge from the whole situation a new person. Truly. Afterwards, my body always feels warm and filled with a really soft + comforting energy, and I’m totally blissed out. I drink another tall glass of water or two to rehydrate, and then usually float off to sleep in minutes. Hydrotherapy is the new red wine, for real.
