Why You (Literally) Need to Stop and Smell the Roses

I've been having a serious moment with all things rose. I'm actually full on obsessed. For thousands of years, roses have been an elusive symbol of love, beauty, and luxury. They just have this way of making us feel sexy, loved, and timelessly chic. But as it turns out, there’s a lot more than meets the eye when it comes to this favorite flower. These delicate but potent beauties have been found to heal everything from heart disease to a post-breakup broken heart (yes, really).

When ingested, roses act as a powerful anti-inflammatory, healing and nourishing our mind, bodies, and souls from the inside out. As we now know, inflammation is the root cause of almost all illness and disease - contributing to everything from diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, anxiety + depression, and cancer (to name just a few). Widely used in Ayurveda to calm and eliminate inflammation within the mind and body, rose and rose oil are soothing antidotes to the physical stresses of everyday living. Due to it’s cleansing properties, rose oil supports the liver with detoxification, and serves as a gentle diuretic, promoting healthy and regular elimination. It also acts as a blood purifier, helping to remove and neutralize toxins within the body. Pretty damn impressive.

And when it comes to nourishing your body’s largest organ, you just can’t beat rose water and rose oil. These skin-soothers are antibacterial, cleansing, calming, deeply moisturizing, and high in antioxidant-rich vitamin C. They're super effective at soothing inflammation and irritation, as well as naturally replenishing lost moisture. The high amounts of vitamin C will prevent your skin from oxidizing (aka aging), keeping you glowing from the inside out.

On top of all that goodness, roses make you happier. A recent study found that when exposed to rose essential oil, individuals displayed immediate decreases in blood pressure, breathing rate, pulse rate, and skin temperature (biological indicators of relaxation), and reported feeling more calm and alert. These results aren’t surprising, as Ayurvedic practitioners have long turned to roses to temper and soothe the internal flames of stress and anxiety. Rose oil has also been found to effectively lift depression, and is widely used in aromatherapy to evoke positive thoughts, relaxation, and feelings of joy. So next time your feeling anything less than radiant, go ahead and buy yourself a dozen roses and show that beautiful soul of yours some serious joy-inducing LOVE.

I've included a few of my absolute favorite rose-derived daily essentials below,
because everyday deserves a little bit of luxury.

Herbivore Botanicals Rose + Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist: There's quite a few rose water facial mists out at the moment, but this entirely plant-based and organic option is a clear standout. The base of moisturizing coconut water is infused with anti-aging hibiscus flower petals and skin-soothing rose oil for one seriously hydrating treat. This is my favorite for beach days and post-workouts.

Radha Beauty Organic Rosehip Oil: Sometimes, simple is best. In lieu of an eye cream (that's most likely loaded up with all kinds of chemicals), I dap a drop of this organic and cold-pressed oil on and around my eyelids and on my lashes every night. Rosehip oil has even been proven effective in preventing and fading dark under-eye circles and wrinkles, yet is super gentle and hypoallergenic, making it perfect for the delicate skin around the eyes.

Jurlique Rose Moisture: I fell in love with this product years ago and to this day it remains my all-time favorite facial moisturizer. It's deeply hydrating but non-greasy, smells heavenly, and tames even the most oily, sensitive, and breakout-prone skin. Perfect for the dryer, colder months.

Pukka Herbs Organic Love Tea: Meet your new favorite bed-time tea. The blend of organic rose petals, chamomile, and lavender is calming + nourishing on a physiological level, and is my go-to for reducing stress and easing anxiety.

Sakara Beauty Water: Most days, you can find me sipping on this rose, silica, and trace mineral infused alkaline water. This hydrating blend detoxifies the body, nourishes the skin, elevates your mood, and creates that inside-out glow - it's also seriously delicious and undeniably chic.
